I began this series as a response to the traditions of painting and the history of women in the arts and traditional “women’s craft.” I started with five 8x8” raw canvas squares and began to pick at the edges until I could pull out a single thread. I then stitched that thread back into the canvas so not to destroy the material’s integrity completely. However, through the process I became more aware of the thread itself. This series was no longer a defiant gesture toward painting. It became an exercise in mindfulness and I began to understand the wonder of the thread: the history of thread; the use of thread; the phenomenon that occurs when individual threads come together to create one unified and strong material. The thread is amazing and infinite and humble.
